The Stadio Diego Armando Maradona was a pressure cooker on Saturday night, but as the final whistle echoed through the Naples air, it was the home fans singing. In a match that tested every ounce of their championship mettle, Napoli clawed back from an early disaster to secure a vital 2-1 victory over a stubborn Lecce side.

For Antonio Conte, this wasn’t the pretty, free-flowing football the Neapolitans dream of, but it was exactly the kind of “dirty win” required to keep their top-four ambitions firmly on track.

A Nightmare Start

The script was tossed out the window within 140 seconds. Lecce, fighting for every point to escape the relegation scrap, caught the reigning champions cold. A deep, arching corner from Antonino Gallo found Jamil Siebert completely unmarked at the back post. The defender made no mistake, thumping a header past Alex Meret to silence the home crowd before they’d even settled into their seats.

Napoli looked shell-shocked. For the remainder of the first half, they dominated the ball—racking up nearly 70% possession—but struggled to find a clinical edge. Matteo Politano and Alisson Santos both came close, but Lecce’s low block held firm, sending the visitors into the tunnel with a shock lead.

The Tactical Masterstroke

Conte didn’t wait to roll the dice. At the break, he introduced the cavalry, bringing on Kevin De Bruyne and Scott McTominay to inject some much-needed verticality into the midfield.

The impact was instantaneous. Just 46 seconds into the second half, the game was level. Politano turned provider, fizzing a low cross into the box for Rasmus Højlund to tap home. It was the striker’s first real sniff at goal, and he took it with clinical efficiency.

Captain Politano Ends the Drought

The comeback was completed in the 67th minute, and it was a moment of personal redemption for the captain. After 43 competitive games without a goal, Matteo Politano finally found the net. A De Bruyne corner was flicked toward the back post, where Politano was waiting to rifle a crisp left-footed volley into the bottom corner.

The relief on his face was palpable as he celebrated in front of the Curva Sud. Napoli managed the final stages with veteran composure, though the night ended on a somber note as Lecce’s Lameck Banda had to be helped off the pitch late in the game.
