If you thought Como’s rise to the top of Italian football was a fluke, Sunday evening at the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia just proved otherwise. In a high-stakes battle for the final Champions League spots, Como pulled off a gritty 2-1 comeback victory over AS Roma, leapfrogging the Giallorossi in the standings and leaving Gian Piero Gasperini with plenty of questions to answer.

A Tale of Two Halves

The match started exactly how the traveling Romanistas wanted. Just seven minutes in, Donyell Malen maintained his red-hot form, coolly converting a penalty to give Roma an early 1-0 lead. For the rest of the first half, Roma looked in control, suffocating the midfield and making Cesc Fabregas’ side look uncharacteristically sluggish.

But the second half was a complete 180.

Whatever Fabregas said in the locker room worked wonders. In the 59th minute, the Sinigaglia erupted as Anastasios Douvikas found the equalizer with a clinical left-footed strike. The momentum swung violently, and just five minutes later, Roma’s afternoon went from bad to worse. Wesley was shown a straight red card for a reckless challenge, leaving the visitors to defend a point with ten men for the final half-hour.

The Diego Carlos Decider

With the man advantage, Como smelled blood. The pressure finally told in the 79th minute when veteran defender Diego Carlos rose highest to smash home a second goal, completing the turnaround. Roma tried to throw the kitchen sink forward late on, but between the post denying them a late equalizer and Jean Butez’s heroics in goal, the points stayed in Lombardy.

What This Means for the Table

This wasn’t just a win; it was a statement. With this result, Como moves into 4th place with 54 points, while Roma slips down to 6th. The race for Europe is becoming a dogfight, and right now, Fabregas has his side dreaming of the biggest stage in club football.
