Just when it looked like Arsenal were going to endure one of those “nearly” afternoons that haunt title contenders, a 16-year-old schoolboy stepped out of the shadows and into the history books. In a pulsating finish at the Emirates on Saturday, Arsenal secured a 2-0 victory over Everton, moving them a massive ten points clear at the top of the Premier League.

89 Minutes of Agony

For the vast majority of the match, it was a story of frustration for Mikel Arteta’s men. Despite dominating possession and peppering Jordan Pickford’s goal with 22 shots, the breakthrough simply wouldn’t come. Everton, well-drilled under David Moyes, looked like they might actually snatch something when Dwight McNeil rattled the woodwork in the first half and David Raya was forced into a world-class save to deny Beto early in the second.

The Breakthrough

The tension in North London was palpable until the 89th minute. Viktor Gyökeres, who had been feeding on scraps all afternoon, finally found the net. A whipped cross from teenage sensation Max Dowman caused chaos in the box; the ball ricocheted off Piero Hincapié and fell perfectly for the Swede to tap home from point-blank range. The Emirates erupted, but the best was yet to come.

History Made by Max Dowman

In the seventh minute of stoppage time, with Jordan Pickford stranded upfield after a desperate Everton corner, the ball broke to Max Dowman inside his own half.

The 16-year-old, still a school student, showed maturity far beyond his years. He skipped past two challenges, raced 75 yards with the poise of a veteran, and calmly slotted the ball into the empty net. At 16 years and 73 days, Dowman officially became the youngest goalscorer in Premier League history, breaking James Vaughan’s long-standing record.

A Giant Leap Toward the Title

With Manchester City trailing in the title race, the psychological blow dealt by this win cannot be overstated. Arsenal took their licks, stayed patient, and let their academy’s brightest spark seal the deal. If they can maintain this grit, the trophy might finally be returning to N5.
