Forget the “Magnifico”—we might need to start calling him the “Record-Breaker.”

On a Sunday afternoon that felt more like a heavyweight boxing match than a football game, Bruno Fernandes didn’t just lead Manchester United to a vital 3-1 win over Aston Villa; he officially kicked David Beckham off his throne.

Coming into the match at Old Trafford, the Portuguese captain was sitting on 14 Premier League assists for the season, stalking Beckham’s legendary 1999/00 record of 15. By the time the final whistle blew, Bruno hadn’t just matched “Becks”—he’d blown past him.

The Double That Did It

The tension in the first half was thick enough to cut with a knife. Villa, fighting for the same Champions League scraps as United, weren’t giving an inch. But after the break, Bruno decided enough was enough.

In the 53rd minute, he whipped a signature corner into the box that found Casemiro’s head to break the deadlock. That was assist number 15. The record was tied.

Then, after Ross Barkley gave United fans a brief heart attack with a 64th-minute equalizer, Bruno stepped up again. In the 71st minute, he threaded a needle-sharp pass through to Matheus Cunha, who slotted it home to restore the lead. That was assist number 16.

History, made.

Chasing the Premier League Crown

Overtaking Beckham is one thing, but Bruno isn’t done. With 16 assists in 27 games, he’s now breathing down the necks of Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne, who share the all-time Premier League single-season record of 20.

United has eight games left. At his current rate of 0.8 assists per game since October, the math says he’s on track for 22. If he pulls that off, we aren’t just talking about a United legend; we’re talking about the greatest creative season in English football history.

What It Means for United

Stats aside, this win was massive. Michael Carrick has transformed Old Trafford into a fortress again, racking up his fifth straight home win. United now sits comfortably in third place, three points ahead of Villa.

As Bruno said after the match, “Bringing joy to others is very good, but the main achievement will be finishing in the top spots.” He’s serving up goals on a silver platter, and United is finally feasting.
