African football has just been hit by a legal thunderbolt. In a move that’s sent the continent into a frenzy, CAF has officially overturned the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final result. Two months after the Lions of Teranga celebrated in the streets of Dakar, they’ve been ordered to hand back the trophy.

The verdict? Morocco are your new champions. And it didn’t happen on the grass—it happened in the boardroom.

The Drama in Rabat: A 17-Minute Ghost Show

To understand this madness, you have to look back at that chaotic January night in Rabat. The final was a scoreless, gritty deadlock until deep into stoppage time when the referee pointed to the spot for a Moroccan penalty.

Then, the wheels came off.

Infuriated by the call, the Senegalese squad, led by coach Pape Thiaw, staged a massive walk-off. For nearly 17 minutes, the pitch was a vacuum. While Sadio Mane eventually coaxed his teammates back out—and Morocco actually missed the resulting penalty—the damage was already done in the eyes of the rulebook. Senegal went on to win 1-0 in extra time through a Pape Gueye strike, but Morocco immediately launched a “rules-first” appeal.

The Legal Hammer: Articles 82 & 84

CAF’s Appeal Board didn’t just fine Senegal; they nuked the result. By citing Articles 82 and 84 of the AFCON regulations, the board ruled that leaving the field without the referee’s permission constitutes a forfeit.

The Ruling: The 1-0 Senegal victory is deleted.

The Scoreline: Officially recorded as a 3-0 win for Morocco.

The Fallout: Morocco claims their first continental crown since 1976.

“A Travesty for Africa”

The reaction from Dakar has been pure fire. Abdoulaye Seydou Sow, the Secretary General of the Senegalese Federation, didn’t hold back, calling the decision a “shame for Africa” and a travesty with “no legal basis.” Lyon defender Moussa Niakhaté even took to Instagram with a photo of the trophy and a blunt message for CAF: “Come and get it.”

The Moroccan FA (FRMF), meanwhile, is playing it cool, stating they weren’t attacking Senegal’s “sporting performance” but simply demanding the rules be followed to the letter.

What’s Next?

This isn’t over. Senegal has already confirmed they are taking the case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). For now, the Atlas Lions are the kings of Africa on paper, but expect a long, ugly battle in the courts before the gold is settled for good.
