Real Madrid’s golden boy, Jude Bellingham, has finally broken his silence on the emotional toll of his recent injury layoff, admitting he was “sad for a long time” during his seven-week stint on the sidelines.

The England superstar made his long-awaited return to action during Sunday night’s thrilling 3-2 Madrid Derby victory over Atletico Madrid. While he only featured for 22 minutes, his presence alone felt like a massive weight lifting off the Bernabéu. But it’s his post-match honesty that has really caught the headlines.

The Mental Toll of the Sidelines

Bellingham hasn’t kicked a ball in a competitive match since February 1st, after tearing a hamstring muscle against Rayo Vallecano. Speaking to Realmadrid TV after the derby, the 22-year-old didn’t hide behind the usual “macho athlete” clichés.

“Very long. Seven weeks. I was sad for a long time, but now I’m happy because I’m back training with my teammates,” Bellingham admitted.
For a player who lives and breathes the game, being unable to influence Madrid’s title charge or England’s preparations under Thomas Tuchel clearly left a mark. It wasn’t just a physical recovery; it was a mental battle to stay positive while watching his teammates—specifically Vinicius Jr. and Federico Valverde—carry the load in his absence.

A Leader in Vulnerability

This isn’t the first time Jude has touched on the “darkness” of professional sport. As a Laureus Ambassador, Bellingham has been a vocal advocate for mental health, recently urging athletes to ditch the “tough guy” image and speak up when they feel vulnerable.

By admitting his “sadness” during this injury, he’s practicing exactly what he preaches. In a world where elite players are often treated like robots, Bellingham’s raw honesty is a breath of fresh air for fans and fellow pros alike.

What’s Next for Jude?

Despite the “long” seven weeks of gloom, the clouds have parted at just the right time. Bellingham is officially back in the mix for Real Madrid’s Champions League quarter-final clash against Bayern Munich in April.

More importantly for England fans, he’s part of Tuchel’s latest squad. With the 2026 World Cup looming, a fit and—more importantly—happy Jude Bellingham is exactly what the Three Lions need to finally bring it home.
