The Manchester City faithful had hoped the 2024 Ballon d’Or winner would be a “Blue for life,” but the ground in East Manchester is shifting. In a bombshell interview released today, March 26, 2026, Rodri has officially addressed the long-standing interest from Real Madrid, admitting that the pull of his hometown and the prestige of the Bernabéu are impossible to ignore.

With his contract entering its final 15 months and negotiations with City’s new sporting director, Hugo Viana, reportedly hitting a standstill, the “midfield general” has put the football world on high alert.

“We’ll Have to Sit Down and Talk”

Speaking to Onda Cero, Rodri was uncharacteristically open about his future. While he reiterated his love for the Premier League, he refused to shut the door on a return to Spain.

“Madrid is my home,” the 29-year-old stated. “You can’t simply turn down the world’s top clubs. I’m happy at City, but there will come a time when we have to sit down and talk.”

Crucially, Rodri addressed his past with Atletico Madrid, dismissing the idea that his history with the Rojiblancos would prevent him from wearing the famous white shirt. “Having played for Atletico doesn’t mean I can’t wear the Real Madrid shirt,” he noted. “Others have taken that path.”

The “Toni Kroos” Void

For Real Madrid, the pursuit of Rodri isn’t just about collecting another superstar—it’s about structural survival. Since the retirement of Toni Kroos and the aging of Luka Modrić, Los Blancos have lacked a deep-lying playmaker with “metronomic” control.

Florentino Pérez reportedly views Rodri as the “dream solution” to lead a midfield that already boasts the explosive power of Jude Bellingham and Fede Valverde. Reports suggest Madrid are preparing a €50 million (£43m) opening bid for this summer, hoping to capitalize on the fact that City risk losing their talisman for free in 2027 if a new deal isn’t signed.

Recovery and Redemption

The timing of these rumors is particularly poignant given Rodri’s recent struggles. After an 18-month “nightmare” following a serious ACL injury in late 2024, the Spaniard has only recently returned to his best form.

His performance in City’s Carabao Cup final win over Arsenal last month proved he is still the best in the world at what he does. However, sources close to the player suggest the grueling physical demands of the Premier League—which he described as his “weakness”—might be pushing him toward a more “tactical” league like La Liga as he approaches 30.

The City Stance: Sell or Renew?

Manchester City find themselves in a precarious position. Hugo Viana is reportedly prioritizing a “lucrative extension” to keep Rodri at the Etihad until 2029. However, the club has a history of not standing in the way of players who express a genuine desire to leave, provided the price is right.

If Rodri signals that he won’t renew, City may be forced to cash in this summer to fund a move for a younger successor, with names like Martin Zubimendi and Warren Zaïre-Emery already being whispered in the corridors of the City Football Academy.
