If anyone thought the pressure of a European quarter-final would rattle Oliver Glasner’s Crystal Palace, they clearly haven’t been watching this team lately. Under the lights at a rocking Selhurst Park yesterday, the Eagles didn’t just win—they bullied Fiorentina in a clinical 3-0 demolition that leaves one foot firmly in the Conference League semi-finals.

The atmosphere in SE25 was electric, and Palace fed off it from the first whistle. While the Italians tried to settle into their trademark possession game, Palace were a whirlwind of high-pressing chaos.

Mateta’s Magic and Mitchell’s Moment

The breakthrough felt inevitable, and it arrived in the 24th minute. Evann Guessand, who was a constant nuisance for the Viola backline, was hacked down in the box by a desperate Dodo. Jean-Philippe Mateta—back in the side and looking hungry—stepped up and sent the legendary David De Gea the wrong way with the coolness of a man buying a Sunday paper.

Before Fiorentina could even catch their breath, it was two. A goalmouth scramble saw the ball fall to Tyrick Mitchell, who lashed a left-footed strike across the face of goal and into the far corner. Two goals in seven minutes, and Selhurst was in absolute pandemonium.

The Sarr Stinger

Fiorentina tried to mount a comeback in the second half, with De Gea later admitting they “gifted” Palace the platform, but the Eagles’ defense was a brick wall. Adam Wharton and Daichi Kamada bossed the engine room, snuffing out every Italian spark before it could become a flame.

The icing on the cake came in the 94th minute. Just as the referee was looking at his watch, Kamada swung in a peach of a cross, and Ismaïla Sarr rose highest to thump a header into the top corner. 3-0. Game, set, and quite possibly, match.

Palace head to Florence next week with a massive advantage. For the fans who have dreamt of European nights like this, the reality is even better than the fantasy.
