It’s FA Cup semi-final Sunday, and while we’d all much rather be talking about Manchester United at Wembley, we’re stuck watching Chelsea and Leeds United battle it out for a spot in the final. For us United fans, it’s a bit like choosing between a headache and a stomach ache, but there is no denying the historical “spice” in this one.

More than 50 years after their infamous 1970 final, these two old rivals meet again with a trophy in sight. Chelsea are a club in absolute freefall, while Leeds are smelling blood in the water.

The Context: Chelsea’s Management Circus

If you thought things were chaotic elsewhere, take a look at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea sacked Liam Rosenior just days ago after a pathetic 3-0 loss to Brighton. Now, interim boss Calum McFarlane takes the reins for this massive Wembley showdown.

Chelsea have lost five of their last six matches, and they haven’t even scored in most of them. Their only saving grace? They haven’t lost to Leeds in the FA Cup in over half a century. But records are meant to be broken, and this Chelsea side is as fragile as they come.

Leeds United, on the other hand, are unbeaten against the Blues this season (a 3-1 win and a 2-2 draw). Daniel Farke has turned them into a resilient unit that won’t be intimidated by the bright lights of Wembley.

Team News & Probable Lineups

Chelsea:

The Blues are sweating on the fitness of Cole Palmer and Joao Pedro. Both have trained, but if they aren’t 100%, Chelsea’s attack is practically non-existent. Estevao Willian is definitely out after suffering a hamstring injury against us (United) earlier this month.

Probable XI: Sommer; Gusto, Hato, Tosin, Colwill; Fernandez, Essugo, Palmer; Neto, Joao Pedro, Garnacho.

Leeds United:

The Whites are expected to be at near-full strength. Captain Ethan Ampadu will be the key man in midfield, looking to disrupt Chelsea’s rhythm and protect a backline that has handled the Blues well all year.

Probable XI: Perri; Gray, Rodon, Struijk, Firpo; Ampadu, Gruev; James, Rutter, Summerville; Piroe.

Head-to-Head & Key Stats

The Recent Trend: Leeds are unbeaten in both Premier League meetings this season (W1 D1).

FA Cup Dominance: Chelsea has progressed from all six previous FA Cup ties against Leeds.

Chelsea’s Scoring Woes: The Blues have failed to score in five of their last six matches in all competitions.

Match Prediction

As much as it pains me to say, Chelsea usually find a way to flip the switch in the FA Cup. However, with a new interim manager and a squad lacking any real identity, Leeds will never have a better chance to reach a final.

Expect a scrappy, ill-tempered game. Leeds will likely dominate the energy and the tackle count, but if Palmer starts, Chelsea might just have that one moment of individual quality to sneak through.

Final Score Prediction: Chelsea 1-0 Leeds United (AET)
