Spain’s national team captain Álvaro Morata has shattered the silence surrounding his highly turbulent club career, delivering an emotional and brutally honest confession about his departure from Atlético Madrid.

The 33-year-old striker, who left the Metropolitano to join AC Milan, has openly admitted that leaving Diego Simeone’s side was a monumental error in judgment—one that he regrets to this very day.

Overlooking the Warning Signs

Speaking candidly about the sequence of events that led to his exit, Morata revealed that his inner circle had desperately tried to convince him to stay in the Spanish capital. Both his family and his agent explicitly advised him against pushing for a transfer away from Atlético Madrid, a club where he was deeply valued by the coaching staff.

Unfortunately, feelings of being underappreciated by sections of the media and the fanbase ultimately clouded his judgment, prompting him to ignore that sound advice.

“Leaving Atlético Madrid was the biggest mistake of my professional career,” Morata reflected in a deeply personal statement. “I had everything there—a manager who believed in me, teammates who supported me, and a club that felt like home. I let outside noise dictate my choices, and I paid a massive price for it.”

A Turbulent Journey Since Leaving Spain

The grass has certainly not been greener for the nomadic forward since he forced his way out of Madrid. His high-profile move to the San Siro quickly turned into a tactical nightmare. Morata struggled immensely to establish himself in Italy, managing just six goals in 26 appearances before finding himself completely frozen out of the squad.

His career has since turned into a whirlwind of temporary fixes, leading to an immediate loan spell at Galatasaray and a recent stint at Serie A newcomers Como.

While Morata has historically been a player who transitions seamlessly between Europe’s elite clubs—having played for Real Madrid, Juventus, and Chelsea—this latest string of transfers has felt entirely different. It has lacked the stability and purpose he finally looked to have found under Diego Simeone.

Looking Ahead to the Big Stage

Despite the ongoing chaos and instability at the club level, Morata’s focus has now shifted entirely toward international duty. As the undisputed captain of the Spanish national team, he carries the immense responsibility of leading La Roja into another major tournament cycle.

National team boss Luis de la Fuente has continued to show unwavering faith in his skipper, viewing Morata’s veteran leadership and tactical intelligence as indispensable components for Spain’s silverware ambitions.

While the striker can no longer change the past or undo the paperwork that severed his ties with Atlético Madrid, he is entirely determined to channel his personal frustrations into a defining performance on the global stage.
