Fulham’s FA Cup dream came to a painful end on Sunday after a dramatic 1–0 defeat to Southampton at Craven Cottage, with a stoppage-time penalty sealing a shock win for the Championship side.

Just when the fifth-round tie looked destined for extra time, the match swung dramatically in the final moments. Fulham defender Joachim Andersen brought down Finn Azaz in the penalty area, giving the visitors a golden opportunity. Substitute Ross Stewart stepped up in the 91st minute and calmly fired the spot-kick past goalkeeper Benjamin Lecomte, sending Southampton into the quarter-finals.

Fulham frustrations and controversy

Fulham thought they had taken the lead earlier in the game, but a bizarre refereeing decision ruled out what appeared to be a legitimate goal. Later, another effort was disallowed for offside, leaving Marco Silva’s side frustrated throughout the afternoon.

The Premier League side dominated possession but struggled to create clear chances against a disciplined Southampton defense. In contrast, the visitors looked dangerous on the counterattack and forced several key saves from Lecomte before finally breaking through late on.

Silva’s gamble backfires

Fulham manager Marco Silva rotated heavily, making several changes to his lineup after a midweek league defeat, but the gamble failed to pay off as his side lacked rhythm and cutting edge in attack.

For Southampton, the result is a huge boost. The Championship club becomes the first non-Premier League team to reach the FA Cup quarter-finals this season, keeping alive hopes of a memorable cup run.
