Coventry Cruise Past Preston to Extend Championship Lead

Coventry City delivered another dominant performance in the EFL Championship, beating Preston North End 3–0 in front of their home fans at the Coventry Building Society Arena. The convincing victory strengthened Coventry’s grip at the top of the table and continued their impressive winning streak this season.

Fast Start Sets the Tone

Coventry began the match with intensity and quickly took control of the game. Their breakthrough came in the 17th minute when Japanese winger Tatsuhiro Sakamoto found the net, giving the hosts an early advantage and energizing the crowd.

The Sky Blues doubled their lead midway through the first half. Ghana-born striker Brandon Thomas‑Asante finished a well-worked attacking move in the 34th minute, leaving Preston chasing the game before halftime.

Grimes Seals the Victory

Any hopes of a Preston comeback faded shortly after the restart. Coventry were awarded a penalty early in the second half, and captain Matt Grimes calmly converted from the spot in the 50th minute to make it 3–0.

From that point, Coventry controlled the tempo of the match, limiting Preston to very few clear chances. The hosts finished the game comfortably, securing another important three points in their push for promotion.

Big Boost for Promotion Ambitions

The victory continued Coventry’s excellent form under manager Frank Lampard, moving them further clear at the top of the Championship table. The result also marked their sixth consecutive win and widened the gap over their closest challengers in the promotion race.

For Preston, the defeat adds more pressure as they struggle to find consistent form. With only one win in several recent matches, they will need to regroup quickly if they want to climb back up the table.
