If you wanted a quiet Sunday afternoon in South London, Selhurst Park was the wrong place to be. In a match that was practically a fever dream of officiating drama and missed opportunities, Crystal Palace and Leeds United played out a 0-0 draw that left both sets of fans—and managers—scratching their heads.

For Leeds, it’s a heroic point earned the hard way; for Palace, it’s a missed chance that saw them booed off the pitch at full-time.

Five Minutes of Absolute Madness

The first half was largely a cagey affair until it exploded into chaos right before the interval. In the 45th minute, Palace midfielder Will Hughes was penalized for a “curious” handball inside the area. Dominic Calvert-Lewin stepped up to give the visitors the lead, but the striker completely shanked his effort, dragging the penalty well wide of the left post.

Before Leeds could even process the miss, disaster struck again. Just seconds before the whistle, defender Gabriel Gudmundsson—already on a yellow—caught Ismaila Sarr with a late challenge. Referee Thomas Bramall didn’t hesitate to show a second yellow, followed by a red.

The image of Palace’s Jaydee Canvot celebrating the dismissal right in front of the Leeds bench became an instant viral moment, leaving commentators and fans alike stunned by the intensity.

The Great Leeds Wall

With a man advantage for the entire second half, Oliver Glasner threw everything at Leeds. He introduced Jean-Philippe Mateta and Adam Wharton to find a breakthrough, but they ran into a wall of white shirts.

Leeds keeper Karl Darlow and defender Maxence Lacroix (who earned Man of the Match honors) were everywhere. Even when Palace did find the back of the net through a Jefferson Lerma header in the 79th minute, VAR came to Leeds’ rescue. The goal was chalked off because Brennan Johnson was ruled offside during the short-corner routine that started the move.

Debut Heroics and Missed Steps

A bright spot for Palace was the Premier League debut of goalkeeper Walter Benítez, who stepped in for an ill Dean Henderson. Benítez proved his worth early on, pulling off a remarkable goal-line save to deny a downward header from Calvert-Lewin that appeared destined for the net.

Despite the heroics at both ends, the game ended in a stalemate. Palace looked “sluggish” according to home supporters, while Daniel Farke will be beaming with pride at his side’s “character” to hold on.

The Table Standings

The point keeps Palace in 14th place on 39 points, while Leeds move to 15th with 32 points. For Leeds, it’s a vital step toward safety, staying three points clear of the bottom three. For Palace, their focus now shifts to a crucial Conference League clash against AEK Larnaca on Thursday.
