If you went to bed early thinking Nottingham Forest were heading for a quiet exit in Denmark, you missed one of the gutsiest performances of the season. After trailing 1-0 from the first leg at the City Ground, Vitor Pereira’s men pulled off a massive “rescue act” at the MCH Arena, surviving a rollercoaster 120 minutes before silencing the home crowd in a clinical penalty shootout.

It wasn’t pretty, and it certainly wasn’t easy, but Forest are officially into the Europa League Quarter-Finals.

Pereira’s Big Gamble

The lineup caused a few raised eyebrows before kickoff. With a massive Premier League relegation scrap against Tottenham looming on Sunday, Pereira made nine changes. Stars like Morgan Gibbs-White and Elliot Anderson started on the bench, leaving many fans wondering if the manager had already given up on Europe.

He hadn’t. Forest came out like a team possessed. Nicolas Dominguez sparked the comeback in the 40th minute, meeting a recycled cross with a thumping header to level the aggregate score. When Ryan Yates doubled the lead early in the second half with a sensational arrowed strike, the traveling Garibaldi fans were in dreamland.

Heartbreak and Heroics

Just as Forest looked to be coasting, the “Midtjylland Curse” struck again. Martin Erlic capitalized on a loose ball in the 69th minute to make it 1-2 on the night and 2-2 on aggregate.

The game turned into a war of attrition. Forest had a late Yates winner ruled out for offside, and after a scoreless extra time period, we went to the dreaded spot-kicks.

The Shootout: Cold as Ice

While Midtjylland completely lost their composure—missing all three of their attempts—Forest were flawless.

Morgan Gibbs-White (scored)

Ibrahim Sangare (scored)

Neco Williams (scored)

When Midtjylland’s Edward Chilufya skied his effort over the bar, the celebrations began. Forest win 3-0 on penalties!

The Verdict: This is a massive statement. Despite the rotation and the pressure of a relegation battle, this squad showed they have the depth and the mental toughness to compete on the big stage. Next up: either Porto or Stuttgart.
