Spurs in Freefall: Nottingham Forest Plunge Tudor’s Men Into Relegation Nightmare

0

The atmosphere outside the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium was electric before kickoff, with thousands of fans lining the streets to welcome the bus in a desperate show of solidarity. But by the 90th minute, that electricity had turned into a toxic chorus of boos. In what was billed as a “relegation six-pointer,” Nottingham Forest didn’t just win—they humiliated Tottenham 3-0, leaving Igor Tudor’s side just a single point above the drop zone.

The Hope, The Woodwork, and The Sucker Punch

For the first 44 minutes, you’d have been forgiven for thinking Spurs were turning a corner. They bossed the ball, pinned Forest back, and came agonizingly close to the opener. Kevin Danso saw a header from a corner clip the bar, and Mathys Tel forced a world-class fingertip save from Matz Sels that also rattled the woodwork.

But football is a cruel game when you’re at the bottom. On the stroke of halftime, against the total run of play, Forest struck. Neco Williams whipped in a corner, and Igor Jesus rose highest to power a header past Guglielmo Vicario. It was a gut-punch from which Spurs never recovered.

A Shambolic Second Half

If the first half was about bad luck, the second was about a total lack of spine. Spurs emerged from the tunnel looking shell-shocked, and Forest smelled blood. In the 62nd minute, Callum Hudson-Odoi carved through a static midfield to find Morgan Gibbs-White. His low finish squirmed right through Vicario—a goalkeeper who, it was later revealed, was playing a day before scheduled hernia surgery.

Tudor threw on the cavalry, introducing Lucas Bergvall and Randal Kolo Muani, but the tactical shift did nothing to stop the bleeding. The hosts looked devoid of ideas, recycling possession aimlessly while Forest remained a constant threat on the counter.

The Final Nail

The exodus toward the exits began in earnest in the 87th minute. Neco Williams, the undisputed man of the match, turned provider again, curling a teasing ball to the far post. Substitute Taiwo Awoniyi made no mistake, volleying home to make it 3-0 and seal Forest’s second league double over Spurs in as many seasons.

The stats tell a grim story: Spurs had 58% of the ball and 13 corners to Forest’s 3, yet they only managed three shots on target. It’s a joint-worst record for the club after 31 games, mirroring the 1914-15 season when they were ultimately relegated. With the international break looming, the big question in North London isn’t just about survival—it’s whether Igor Tudor will even be in the dugout for the next game.
