The Great Escape: Akliouche and Balogun Spark Monaco’s Stunning Comeback in Lyon

If the first half at the Groupama Stadium was a funeral for AS Monaco’s winning streak, the second half was a glorious resurrection. In a high-stakes battle for the Champions League spots, Monaco overturned a halftime deficit to sink a slumping Olympique Lyonnais 2-1, securing their sixth consecutive Ligue 1 victory in a match that ended in absolute refereeing carnage.

The Endrick Magic

Lyon entered this one desperate. Winless in seven and recently dumped out of the Europa League, they played like a team with a point to prove. They dominated the opening 45 minutes, largely thanks to the teenage sensation Endrick. The Brazilian on loan from Real Madrid was a nightmare for the Monaco backline, and in the 42nd minute, he produced a moment of pure class. Skipping past two defenders, he laid a perfect cutback for Pavel Šulc, who smashed a powerful strike under the bar to give Lyon a deserved lead.

Lyon nearly doubled it before the break when Corentin Tolisso’s curling effort rattled the post, leaving the visitors looking shell-shocked as they headed for the tunnel.

Akliouche Takes Control

Whatever Sébastien Pocognoli said at the break turned the tide. Monaco emerged as a different beast, and in the 62nd minute, Maghnes Akliouche decided to take the game by the scruff of its neck. Controlling a long ball with a sublime first touch, he danced inside Clinton Mata and curled a magnificent shot into the top corner.

The momentum had shifted completely. Ten minutes later, Akliouche was at it again, drawing a clumsy foul from Tolisso inside the area. Folarin Balogun stepped up, ignored the deafening whistles of the Lyon faithful, and coolly slotted home the penalty. It was Balogun’s 15th goal of the season and his fifth in as many games—a feat not seen in Monaco colors since the days of Kevin Volland.

The Red Mist

The final ten minutes were less about football and more about survival. Lyon’s frustration boiled over in the 89th minute when Nicolás Tagliafico—who had already escaped punishment for an earlier clash—was shown a straight red for a violent, studs-up lunge on Lamine Camara.

In the ensuing chaos, Monaco boss Sébastien Pocognoli was also sent to the stands for a heated confrontation with the officials. Despite eight minutes of stoppage time and a late flurry of chances from substitute Ansu Fati, Monaco held firm to move within a single point of Lyon in the table.

For Lyon, the “freefall” continues. For Monaco, the podium isn’t just a dream anymore—it’s right there for the taking.
