“A Proud Inheritance”: Zech Obiero Ready for Harambee Stars Debut Under Benni McCarthy

0

The Obiero name is back in the Harambee Stars fold, and this time, it’s Zech Obiero carrying the torch. The 21-year-old midfielder has officially arrived in the Kenya camp in Kigali, Rwanda, after earning his maiden senior call-up for the 2026 FIFA Series.

For Zech, currently on loan at Tranmere Rovers from Leyton Orient, this isn’t just another international window. It’s a full-circle moment for his family. His father, Henry Obiero, was a Kenyan international and a legend at Gor Mahia in the 1980s. Now, decades later, the English-born playmaker is ready to honor those roots on the pitch.

The “Benni McCarthy Effect”

The recruitment of the former Tottenham Hotspur academy graduate is a massive win for Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy. The South African legend personally spearheaded a scouting mission to the UK to convince diaspora talent like Obiero and Wrexham’s Zak Vyner to commit to the Kenyan project.

Speaking from the team’s base at the Amahoro Stadium, Obiero admitted that a face-to-face chat with McCarthy was the deciding factor.

“Benni is a legend in the game. Speaking to him was an honor,” Obiero said. “He has a clear plan for where he wants to take Kenya, and as a player, that’s exactly what you want to hear—confidence and a vision.”
A Creative Spark in Midfield

Obiero arrives at a crucial time for the national team. With captain Michael Olunga and several other key regulars sidelined through injury, the Stars are in desperate need of fresh energy and creativity.

Having already featured for the Kenya U20 side at the AFCON in Egypt, Zech is no stranger to the national setup, but the senior level is a different beast. Known for his dribbling and “attacking-minded” style, the young midfielder has been a bright spot for Tranmere this season, even as they battle through a tough League Two campaign.

The Road to AFCON 2027

While the upcoming friendlies against Estonia (Friday, March 27) and either Rwanda or Grenada are technically “exhibitions,” McCarthy is treating them as the foundation for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which Kenya will co-host.

The injection of “professional habits” from the English leagues is exactly what the FKF hierarchy is banking on to elevate the squad’s technical ceiling. For Zech Obiero, Friday could be the night he stops being a “prospect” and becomes a cornerstone of the new-look Harambee Stars.
