The international wilderness is finally over for Ben White. In a move that has sent shockwaves through the England camp, Thomas Tuchel has officially handed the Arsenal defender a recall for the upcoming friendlies against Uruguay and Japan.

This marks the end of a nearly four-year self-imposed exile. White hasn’t pulled on a Three Lions shirt since the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where he left the squad mid-tournament for “personal reasons.” Reports of a bust-up with former assistant Steve Holland kept him out of the loop for the remainder of Gareth Southgate’s tenure, with White famously making himself unavailable for selection.

The Replacement Game

The recall comes as a stroke of fate. With Bayer Leverkusen’s Jarell Quansah forced to withdraw due to a thigh injury, Tuchel turned to White to bolster his defensive options. While White has seen limited starts in the Premier League this season due to the blistering form of Jurrien Timber, his consistency in Arsenal’s Champions League run has clearly kept him in Tuchel’s good books.

Interestingly, White’s inclusion has reignited the debate over England’s right-back hierarchy. Real Madrid’s Trent Alexander-Arnold was once again overlooked, a decision Tuchel defended as a “tactical choice” rather than a permanent snub.

Why Now?

Tuchel has been open about his dialogue with White since taking the job. The German tactician reportedly spoke to the 28-year-old multiple times, eventually being convinced that White was ready to commit to the national cause again.
“He wants to be back,” Tuchel noted earlier this year. “It is a tough decision for others, but Ben provides a unique profile that we need heading into the World Cup.”
England face Uruguay at Wembley this Friday, followed by Japan next Tuesday. For White, it’s a chance to add to his four caps and prove he belongs on the plane to the 2026 World Cup in North America.
