“Fairness and Clear Rules”: Lens Slam PSG’s “Unfair” Request to Postpone Title Clash

0

The Ligue 1 title race has moved from the pitch to the boardroom, and it’s getting ugly. RC Lens have officially broken their silence, releasing a stinging statement on Monday to reject Paris Saint-Germain’s attempt to postpone their high-stakes showdown scheduled for April 11.

The clash, which features the league’s top two sides separated by just a single point, is currently sandwiched between the two legs of PSG’s massive Champions League quarter-final against Liverpool. Luis Enrique’s side wants the extra rest; Lens, however, is having none of it.

“We Don’t Agree”

In a firm response to what they called a “recent surge in public comments,” Lens made their position crystal clear. The club revealed they had told PSG from the very first inquiry that they would not support a date change.

“Racing Club de Lens remains committed to fairness, clear rules, and respect for all involved,” the statement read. “These are simple principles for a fair and well-respected French football.”

The “Blood and Gold” aren’t just playing hardball for the sake of it. A postponement would leave Lens without a competitive game for two weeks, followed by a brutal “three-game week” later in May—a schedule they argue would destroy their momentum just as they’ve overtaken PSG at the top of the table.

Pierre Sage Slams the Double Standard

Lens manager Pierre Sage didn’t hold back after his side’s 5-1 demolition of Angers on Friday. Pointing out that Lens received zero favors during their own congested runs, Sage suggested that the league’s “elite” shouldn’t get special treatment.

“We played a French Cup match on a Thursday and had to play on Sunday against Metz,” Sage remarked. “I understand that rest allows for better performance, but [PSG] is a club that performs very well across many trophies. They understand the constraints.”

The LFP’s Dilemma

PSG has already benefited from a “free weekend” earlier this month, having their game against Nantes moved to help them prepare for Chelsea. While the LFP (French Football League) often favors clubs carrying the French flag in Europe to boost the UEFA coefficient, the backlash from Lens has turned this into a PR nightmare.

If the league rules in favor of PSG during this Thursday’s board meeting, expect the “fairness” debate in French football to reach a boiling point.
