Gunners Stun Blues: Arsenal Women Take Commanding 3-1 Lead into UWCL Second Leg

0

The Emirates Stadium was absolutely rocking yesterday as Arsenal Women put one foot in the Champions League semi-finals with a gritty, clinical 3-1 dismantling of Chelsea. If you missed this one, you missed a masterclass in bending but not breaking. Despite the Blues rattling the woodwork twice and having two goals chalked off, the Gunners’ efficiency in front of goal proved to be the difference.

First-Half Blitz

Chelsea started like a house on fire. Within the first 15 minutes, both Alyssa Thompson and Lauren James saw efforts ping off the inside of the post. It felt like a matter of time before the visitors took the lead, but football is a cruel game. Against the run of play in the 22nd minute, Stina Blackstenius rose highest to nod home a pinpoint Katie McCabe free-kick, sending the North London crowd into a frenzy.

Ten minutes later, the lead doubled. Chloe Kelly, who always seems to save her best for the big stage, unleashed a swerving, dipping strike from distance that skipped past Hannah Hampton. Chelsea thought they’d pulled one back before the break through a Veerle Buurman header, but the referee spotted a foul on Laia Codina—a decision that will surely be debated in the Chelsea camp for weeks.

Second-Half Drama

The second half saw more of the same “edge-of-your-seat” action. Lauren James eventually got her goal in the 66th minute—a genuine thunderbolt that gave Anneke Borbe no chance and briefly silenced the Emirates.

However, any hopes of a Chelsea comeback were extinguished in the 76th minute. Alessia Russo showed exactly why she’s one of the most feared strikers in Europe, burying a low finish into the bottom corner after a scrappy bit of play from McCabe. Chelsea pushed late and even bundled the ball over the line via Kadeisha Buchanan in stoppage time, but a foul on the keeper saw it ruled out again.

The Road Ahead

Arsenal heads to Stamford Bridge for the second leg next Wednesday with a two-goal cushion. For Sonia Bompastor’s Blues, they’ll need a miracle at home to overturn this deficit against a Gunners side that looks hungry to defend their European status.
