The “Galactico” project in South Beach is about to get a serious defensive upgrade. Just months after legends Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba hung up their boots, Inter Miami has officially moved to fill the leadership vacuum. On Saturday, reports from transfer guru Fabrizio Romano confirmed that the Herons have submitted a formal opening proposal to Manchester United’s Casemiro.
The Brazilian midfield anchor, who will turn 34 next year, is set to become a free agent this summer after United opted not to trigger his one-year extension. While several Saudi Pro League giants and European clubs are circling, it’s understood that Casemiro is “highly amenable” to the Miami move, attracted by the prospect of protecting Lionel Messi and the lifestyle of South Florida.
Replacing a Legend
The timing couldn’t be more perfect for Javier Mascherano’s side. Since Busquets retired in January, Miami has lacked that veteran “metronome” in the center of the park. Casemiro is seen as the final piece of the puzzle—a player who can provide the defensive steel and tactical discipline that allows Messi and Luis Suárez to work their magic upfront.
Despite Manchester United’s struggles over the past two seasons, Casemiro has been a rare bright spot this year under interim boss Michael Carrick, even chipping in with seven goals. His resurgence has had the Stretford End chanting “One more year,” but the club’s hierarchy is reportedly sticking to their guns on a squad overhaul, clearing the way for his MLS arrival.
The Financial Juggling Act
While the lure of playing with Messi is a massive draw, the deal still hinges on the numbers. Inter Miami already has its Designated Player (DP) spots filled by Messi, Rodrigo De Paul, and Germán Berterame. To make this work, Casemiro would likely have to accept a significant pay cut from his £350,000-a-week United salary or Miami would need to get creative with their roster rules.
The LA Galaxy are also in the hunt, potentially looking to pair Casemiro with Marco Reus, but the “Messi factor” usually tips the scales in Miami’s favor. If the deal goes through, we could be looking at the most decorated midfield in MLS history.
