Stuttgart’s Own: Deniz Undav Rescues Germany in Late Win Over Ghana

STUTTGART, Germany – It was written in the stars at the MHP Arena last night. In a match that felt like a localized celebration of German football, hometown hero Deniz Undav stepped off the bench to net an 88th-minute winner, securing a hard-fought 2-1 victory for Germany over a resilient Ghana side.

A Wasteful First Half

Julian Nagelsmann’s side dominated possession from the jump, pinning the Black Stars deep into their own half. However, for all their 69% possession and slick interplay between Florian Wirtz and Angelo Stiller, the Germans lacked a clinical edge in the final third.

The breakthrough finally came in stoppage time of the first half. A goal-bound effort from Stiller was handled in the box by Jonas Adjetey. After a quick VAR check, Kai Havertz stepped up to the spot and coolly sent Benjamin Asare the wrong way to make it 1-0 at the break.

The Fatawu Twist

The second half saw Nagelsmann ring the changes, introducing Undav and the promising Lennart Karl. But instead of pulling away, Germany allowed Ghana back into the contest.

The Black Stars, who had struggled for rhythm in recent friendlies, found their spark through substitute Abdul Fatawu Issahaku. In the 70th minute, just moments after coming on, Fatawu capitalized on a pinpoint delivery from Union Berlin’s Derrick Köhn to silence the Stuttgart crowd and pull Ghana level.

Undav Seals the Deal

As the clock ticked toward what looked like a frustrating draw, the “Stuttgart Connection” came alive. In the 88th minute, Leroy Sané—another second-half introduction—burst down the wing and fired a low cut-back into the path of Deniz Undav. The striker prodded the ball home from point-blank range, sparking scenes of delirium in the stands of his home stadium.

“To score the winner here, in front of my family and the Stuttgart fans, is something I will never forget,” Undav said post-match. “We had to work hard for it, but these are the kind of tests we need before the World Cup.”

The Road Ahead

For Ghana, the loss is their fourth in a row, but Otto Addo will take heart from the way his side stayed organized under immense pressure. Germany, meanwhile, extends their winning streak to seven matches.

Nagelsmann’s men have two more friendlies against Finland and the USA to fine-tune the engine before they begin their hunt for a fifth World Cup title this June.
