The drought is finally over! In a night of pure emotion and grit, the Democratic Republic of Congo secured their place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, ending a staggering 52-year absence from football’s greatest stage.

Following a grueling qualification campaign that saw them finish as runners-up in CAF Group B, the Leopards had to do it the hard way through the inter-confederation playoffs. In a winner-takes-all clash against Jamaica at the Akron Stadium in Mexico, a 100th-minute extra-time strike from defender Axel Tuanzebe sealed a historic 1-0 victory.

The Path to Group K

DR Congo’s journey was a rollercoaster. They battled through a tough CAF group featuring Senegal and Sudan, eventually earning their playoff spot by edging out Sudan 1-0 in the final group match. After taking down heavyweights like Cameroon and Nigeria in the playoff brackets, they’ve officially become Africa’s 10th representative in the expanded 48-team tournament.

The “Group of Death”?

The draw hasn’t been kind to the returning heroes. DR Congo has been placed into Group K, a section many analysts are already labeling one of the most competitive in the tournament.

The Verdict

While Portugal and Colombia are the heavy favorites to advance, the Leopards shouldn’t be underestimated. Under the tactical guidance of Sébastien Desabre, this squad has developed a “never-say-die” attitude. If Yoane Wissa and Théo Bongonda can find their clinical edge, DR Congo could easily be the surprise package that disrupts the elite in Group K.
