It wasn’t the high-scoring festival many expected, but for the Girona faithful at Estadi Montilivi, a win is a win. In a game defined by narrow margins and a touch of fortune, the Blanquivermells secured a massive 1-0 victory over a high-flying Villarreal side on Monday night.

Coming off the international break, both teams looked a bit “rusty” in the opening stages. However, Girona proved once again why they are a nightmare to visit in 2026, extending their unbeaten first-half record for the calendar year in dramatic fashion.

The Breakthrough via Bad Luck

The first half was largely a defensive clinic. Villarreal’s Georges Mikautadze looked the most dangerous man on the pitch early on, but he was repeatedly denied by some heroic defending from Vitor Reis. Girona suffered a blow just 12 minutes in when their top scorer, Vladyslav Vanat, had to limp off with an injury, forcing an early reshuffle.

Just as it looked like we were heading into the break level, disaster struck for the visitors. In the dying seconds of stoppage time, Arnau Martinez whipped in a dangerous cross that Pau Navarro unfortunately diverted into his own net. It was a cruel blow for the “Yellow Submarine,” but for Girona, it was the stroke of luck they needed.

Reis Stands Tall

If the first half was about luck, the second was about pure resilience. Villarreal came out swinging, and Gerard Moreno looked certain to equalize with a point-blank volley. Enter Vitor Reis. The defender produced a sensational goal-saving block to keep the lead intact, cementing his status as the Man of the Match.

Villarreal boss Marcelino threw everything at it, bringing on fresh legs in Tajon Buchanan and Alfonso Gonzalez, but Girona’s “blue wall” refused to crumble. Luiz Junior made a couple of vital stops to prevent Girona from doubling their lead on the counter, but the single goal was enough.

What’s Next?

This result is a huge confidence booster for Girona as they climb to 12th in the table, finally breaking their home-hoodoo against Villarreal. It’s the perfect warm-up for their massive trip to the Bernabeu to face Real Madrid this Friday.

For Villarreal, it’s a missed opportunity to solidify their grip on third place, though they remain comfortably in the Champions League spots for now.
