967 or 961? The Great Ronaldo Goal Tally Debate Explained

0

The race to 1,000 career goals is reaching a fever pitch, but as Cristiano Ronaldo closes in on the historic milestone, a fierce debate has broken out among statisticians. As of April 2026, is the Portuguese legend sitting on 967 goals or just 961?

Following his clinical brace in Al-Nassr’s 5-2 victory over Al-Najma last week, fans were ready to celebrate goal number 967. However, prominent tracking sites like Transfermarkt and Sofascore have thrown a spanner in the works by listing his total at 961.

Here is exactly why those six goals have become the most controversial strikes in modern football history.

The Arab Club Champions Cup Conflict

The discrepancy boils down to a single tournament: the 2023 Arab Club Champions Cup.

Ronaldo was the star of the show, scoring six goals—including a heroic brace in the final against Al-Hilal—to lead Al-Nassr to the trophy. While the tournament is highly prestigious in the Middle East and organized by the Union of Arab Football Associations (UAFA), it is not technically an “officially recognized” FIFA tournament.

The 967 Count: Most major news outlets and FIFA’s own general historical statistics include these goals, recognizing them as competitive senior matches.

The 961 Count: Data-heavy sites like Transfermarkt argue that because the competition is effectively a pre-season regional invitational not sanctioned by FIFA, the goals cannot be counted toward his “official” career tally.

The Breakdown: Where the Goals Came From

Regardless of which side of the fence you sit on, Ronaldo’s numbers at 41 years old are nothing short of superhuman. Here is how the 967 total is distributed:

Real Madrid: 450

Manchester United: 145

Portugal National Team: 143

Juventus: 101

Al-Nassr: 123 (includes the 6 debated goals)

Sporting CP: 5

The Road to 1,000

Depending on who you ask, CR7 is either 33 or 39 goals away from the quadruple-digit mark. With a contract at Al-Nassr running until June 2027 and the 2026 World Cup on the horizon, the “GOAT” has plenty of time to settle the argument.

As one analyst on X put it: “Ronaldo won’t just hit 1,000; he’ll hit 1,006 just to make sure the statisticians have nothing left to say.”
