The fortress that is the Kakamega Showground is ready for war today. Defending champions Kabras Sugar RFC are set to host Kenyatta University’s Blak Blad in a high-stakes Kenya Cup semi-final showdown. While Kabras are huntin for their 11th consecutive final appearance, the students from KU are stepping into the last four for the first time in their history—setting the stage for a classic “David vs. Goliath” encounter.
The Millers Load Their Guns
Kabras Sugar aren’t taking any chances with the “surprise package” from Nairobi. Head coach Carlos Katywa has bolstered his matchday squad with the return of heavy hitters Brian Tanga and Kevin Wekesa.
The backline looks terrifying, featuring the evergreen Jone Kubu at fly-half and the returning Jackson Siketi on the wing. After finishing the regular season at the top of the table for the eighth year running, the Sugarmen are clearly the favorites, but they know that in a knockout game, anything can happen.
Can Blak Blad Make History?
For Blak Blad, today is already a victory. They shocked the league by edging out Strathmore Leos 27-25 in a tense quarter-final to earn this trip to the “Forest.” They come in with nothing to lose and a massive amount of belief.
However, the stats are heavily stacked against them. Kabras have a powerful forward pack led by Jeanson Misoga and George Nyambua, and their set-piece dominance has been the undoing of every team that has visited Kakamega this season.
The Other Side of the Bracket
While the battle rages in Kakamega at 3:00 PM, Nairobi will be watching the other semi-final at the KCB Sports Club. KCB Rugby hosts Nondescripts at 4:00 PM. The dream for many fans is another “Rai Derby” final between Kabras and KCB, but Nondies and Blak Blad are determined to rip up the script.
