Pep Guardiola’s treble charge is still breathing, but only by the skin of its teeth. In an FA Cup semi-final that will be talked about for years, Manchester City survived a monumental scare to beat Championship high-flyers Southampton 2-1 yesterday, booking a record-breaking fourth consecutive final appearance.

For 79 minutes, it looked like the upset of the century was brewing under the Wembley arch.

The Saints’ Tactical Masterclass

Southampton didn’t come to London to make up the numbers. Tonda Eckert’s side arrived on a 20-game unbeaten streak and played like they belonged in the elite. They sat in a disciplined five-man block that left City’s superstars looking completely disjointed.

Pep’s decision to make wholesale changes backfired early, as the likes of Phil Foden and Rayan Cherki struggled to find a way through the yellow wall. Even when City did find a gap, Daniel Peretz was equal to everything.

Then came the moment that nearly broke the internet. In the 79th minute, Finn Azaz picked up the ball 25 yards out, swivelled with grace, and curled a “peach” into the top corner past a flying James Trafford. The Southampton end went into absolute meltdown—the dream was ten minutes away from reality.

Eight Minutes of Absolute Chaos

If there’s one thing you don’t do to Manchester City, it’s score against them with ten minutes to go. The response was cold, calculated, and ruthless.

1. The Lifeline: In the 82nd minute, the substitute Jeremy Doku—who was the spark City desperately needed—cut inside and fired a shot that took a wicked deflection off James Bree, trickling into the net to level the scores.

2. The Rocket: Just as the game looked headed for extra time, Nico Gonzalez decided to write his name into City folklore. In the 87th minute, he received a pass from Doku, looked up from 30 yards out, and unleashed a rising thunderbolt that nearly tore the net off. It was a “once-in-a-career” strike that broke Southampton hearts.

The final seven minutes of added time were pure carnage, with Savinho having a shot cleared off the line and the Saints throwing everyone forward, but City held firm.

Final Verdict: The Treble Dream Lives

City become the first team in history to reach four successive FA Cup finals. They weren’t at their best—far from it—but champions find a way when the lights are brightest. For Southampton, it was a heartbreaking end to a heroic run, but they proved they are more than ready for a return to the Premier League.
