Teenager Stuns Dea: Paul Mendy’s Brace Sinks Atalanta in Five-Goal Thriller

Cagliari threw the relegation script out the window on Monday night as 19-year-old debutant Paul Mendy inspired a sensational 3-2 victory over Atalanta at the Unipol Domus. In a game that felt like a fever dream for the Sardinian faithful, the hosts proved that desperation is a powerful motivator, leaving a shell-shocked Atalanta wondering how they left empty-handed.

The match exploded into life within 16 seconds. Michel Adopo whipped in a pinpoint cross from the right, and Mendy, making his first professional start, rose highest to head home. The teenager wasn’t finished. Just seven minutes later, he pounced again, firing a left-footed strike past Marco Carnesecchi to make it 2-0 before many fans had even found their seats.

Scamacca Strikes Back

Atalanta, reeling from a midweek Coppa Italia exit, eventually found their footing. Gianluca Scamacca shouldered the burden of the comeback, pulling one back in the 40th minute with a clinical finish. On the stroke of halftime, Scamacca struck again to level the scores at 2-2, seemingly shifting the momentum back to the favorites.

However, Cagliari had other ideas. Despite losing the hero Mendy to injury at the break, his replacement Gennaro Borrelli made an instant impact. Just two minutes into the second half, Borrelli reacted quickest to a loose ball in the box, stabbing it home to restore Cagliari’s lead.

League Impact

The win is a massive lifeline for Cagliari, moving them eight points clear of the drop zone with only four games remaining. For Atalanta, the defeat is a bitter pill to swallow. They remain stuck in 7th place, now seven points adrift of the final European spot, making their path to continental football next season look increasingly steep.
