“Nobody Owes Us Anything”—Simeone Issues Defiant War Cry Ahead of Arsenal Semi-Final

If you thought Diego Simeone would be feeling the weight of three past Champions League final heartbreaks, think again. Ahead of tonight’s massive first-leg clash against Arsenal at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano, the Argentine mastermind delivered a press conference performance that was vintage “Cholo”—gritty, philosophical, and completely unapologetic.

Coming off the back of yesterday’s chaotic 9-goal thriller between PSG and Bayern, Simeone was quick to ground his team in reality. While the world expects another spectacle, Simeone is preparing for a battle in the mud.

“Reality is What Happens on Earth”

When asked if football “owed” Atletico Madrid a Champions League trophy after years of near-misses, Simeone’s response was ice-cold.

“We are human beings. Nobody owes us anything—everything is earned and achieved through work, and with a bit of luck on your side,” Simeone told reporters. “Dreaming is good, but reality is what happens on earth. And what happens on earth is what we do and what God wants.”
It’s a clear message to Mikel Arteta’s high-flying Gunners: Atleti aren’t looking for sympathy or historical justice. They are looking for a fight.

No Pressure, Just Responsibility

Despite a rocky domestic season that sees Atletico 25 points off the pace in La Liga, Simeone dismissed the idea that this is a “save our season” mission. To him, the Champions League isn’t a burden; it’s a privilege.

On the Atmosphere: Simeone admitted the fans were “cold” during their recent win over Athletic Bilbao, but he isn’t asking for favors. “The fans don’t need messages from me; what they need is to win.”

On Arsenal’s Threat: He highlighted Arsenal’s set-piece dominance and tactical control but remained adamant that the Metropolitano “mystique” is real.

On the Squad: Simeone confirmed that Alexander Sorloth is fit and “incredible,” while also hinting at a potential return for Ademola Lookman, though the Nigerian’s fitness remains a late-call mystery.

The Last Dance for Griezmann?

The press conference also carried a heavy emotional weight. Antoine Griezmann, who has already confirmed his summer move to MLS side Orlando City, sat alongside his manager. The Frenchman was blunt: “I hope I can gift something incredible to the fans.”

For Griezmann and Simeone, this isn’t just another semi-final. It’s perhaps the final chance to cement a legacy that has everything except the “Big Ears” trophy.
