The transfer rumor mill is spinning fast at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, as reports emerge that Everton are seriously considering a sensational summer move for their former star, John Stones.
After a trophy-laden decade at the Etihad, the 31-year-old defender has officially confirmed he will leave Manchester City when his contract expires this June. With David Moyes looking to bolster his defensive ranks for next season, a “homecoming” for the ball-playing centre-back is increasingly on the cards.
A Golden Decade Ends
Stones’ announcement marks the end of an era. Since joining City from Everton in 2016, he has become one of the most decorated English defenders in history, helping Pep Guardiola’s side secure:
• 6 Premier League titles
• 1 Champions League trophy
• 2 FA Cups and 3 League Cups
Despite his success, this season has been a frustrating one for the England international. Marred by a persistent thigh injury, Stones has been restricted to just seven Premier League appearances, leading many to believe that a fresh start is exactly what the “Barnsley Beckenbauer” needs.
Why the Toffees?
For Everton, the logic is twofold. First, the chance to land a world-class defender on a free transfer is a rare opportunity that fits the club’s current recruitment strategy. Second, the move provides much-needed veteran depth.
While the squad currently boasts James Tarkowski and Michael Keane, both are now 33. Furthermore, Jarrad Branthwaite is currently sidelined with a hamstring injury sustained in the Merseyside derby, and Jake O’Brien has often been pushed out of his natural position to cover right-back. Bringing Stones back would provide stability, leadership, and that elite ball-playing ability he first showcased at Goodison Park over ten years ago.
The Competition
Everton aren’t the only ones watching the situation. European giants Bayern Munich and Barcelona have also been linked with the veteran defender. However, sources suggest that Stones is keen to remain in the North West of England, which could give the Toffees a significant edge in negotiations.
