The Estadi Montilivi fell silent on Friday night as Girona suffered a frustrating 1-0 defeat at the hands of RCD Mallorca. Despite dominating long stretches of the ball, the Blanquivermells couldn’t find a breakthrough, leaving fans questioning their clinical edge as the La Liga season hits its final stretch.

In what was expected to be a night of celebration for the home side, Girona’s European ambitions took a slight dent. Mallorca arrived with a clear game plan: stay compact, frustrate the hosts, and strike on the counter. It worked to perfection.

First Half: A Header That Changed Everything

The game started with Girona on the front foot, with Viktor Tsygankov looking dangerous on the wing. However, the momentum shifted just before the break. In the 43rd minute, Mallorca’s Samú Costa rose highest in the box to power home a header from a well-placed cross.

Girona tried to respond immediately, but tensions boiled over instead. Tsygankov picked up a yellow card in stoppage time, reflecting the frustration growing among the home side as they headed down the tunnel trailing 1-0.

Second Half: Woodwork and Near Misses

Girona threw everything at the visitors in the second half. Manager Michel made several attacking substitutions, bringing on the veteran Cristhian Stuani and the lively Bryan Gil to spark some life into the final third.

The closest they came was in the 56th minute when Azzedine Ounahi unleashed a curling effort that rattled the post. Mallorca’s defense, led by a disciplined Pablo Maffeo, held firm under immense pressure. As the clock ticked down, Girona became increasingly desperate, resulting in late bookings for Vitor Reis and Thomas Lemar.

Mallorca stayed resilient through five minutes of stoppage time to secure a gritty away win, leaving Girona to reflect on a missed opportunity to climb the table.
