Vini Jr. Masterclass: Real Madrid Delay Barcelona’s Title Party

0

Real Madrid refused to hand over their crown just yet. In a high-stakes Sunday night clash at the RCDE Stadium, the defending champions ground out a 2-0 victory over Espanyol, ensuring that the champagne remains on ice in Barcelona for at least one more week.

With Barcelona currently sitting 11 points clear at the top, anything less than a win for Los Blancos would have mathematically handed the title to their arch-rivals. Instead, a clinical second-half performance has set the stage for a mouth-watering El Clasico next weekend.

Resistance and Review

The first half was a tense, cagey affair. Espanyol, desperate for points to pull away from the relegation scrap, started with surprising aggression. Roberto Fernandez and Ruben Sanchez both forced early saves from Andriy Lunin, while Madrid struggled to find their usual attacking rhythm.

The half’s biggest talking point came when Omar El Hilali was initially shown a red card for a lunging challenge on Vinícius Júnior. However, after a lengthy VAR review, the decision was downgraded to a yellow, much to the relief of the home support. The “Parakeets” held firm, taking a 0-0 stalemate into the locker room.

The Vinícius Show

The deadlock finally broke in the 55th minute. Following a smart tactical switch by manager Alvaro Arbeloa, substitute Gonzalo Garcia injected fresh energy into the attack. Garcia found Vinícius Júnior with a sharp pass, and the Brazilian danced past two defenders before firing a low strike into the bottom corner.

Eleven minutes later, the result was put beyond doubt with a moment of pure magic. Jude Bellingham, operating in a deeper role, spotted Vinícius making a run into the area and found him with a sensational back-heel flick. Vinícius didn’t even take a touch, striking the ball first-time into the top corner to complete his brace and silence the RCDE Stadium.

What It Means

For Real Madrid, the mission was simple: win and survive. They move to 77 points, keeping their mathematically slim title hopes alive. All eyes now turn to next Sunday at the Camp Nou, where a Barcelona win would finally secure the title, while a Madrid victory would continue to delay the inevitable.

Espanyol remains in a precarious position. The defeat leaves them in 13th place, just five points above the drop zone. Having failed to win a single game in 2026, the pressure is mounting on the Barcelona-based club to find a result in their final four fixtures of the season.
