Awoniyi At The Double! Forest Stun Slumping Chelsea to Edge Toward Safety

0

The crisis at Stamford Bridge hit a new low on Monday night as Nottingham Forest walked away with a dominant 3-1 victory, leaving the home fans in stunned silence. While Forest took a massive step toward Premier League survival, Chelsea’s nightmare run under interim boss Calum McFarlane continued with a sixth consecutive league defeat.

Early Blitz from the Tricky Trees

Forest didn’t waste any time making their intentions clear. Just two minutes into the match, Dilane Bakwa skipped past Marc Cucurella on the wing and floated a perfect cross for Taiwo Awoniyi, who rose unchallenged to head home the opener.

The Londoners tried to fight back immediately, with Enzo Fernandez rattling the post with a curling effort, but the optimism was short-lived. By the 15th minute, Forest doubled their lead. Malo Gusto was judged to have pulled Awoniyi’s shirt in the box, and after a VAR review, Igor Jesus stepped up to calmly slot the penalty past Robert Sanchez.

Penalty Heartbreak and Hospital Scare

The end of the first half was marred by a frightening incident. Chelsea debutant Jesse Derry, just 18 years old, was involved in a sickening clash of heads with Forest defender Zach Abbott. The game was halted for over ten minutes as medical staff attended to Derry, who was eventually stretchered off and taken to the hospital.

In the midst of the tension, Chelsea were awarded a penalty of their own for the foul on Derry. However, Cole Palmer couldn’t capitalize; his low effort was brilliantly saved by Matz Sels, sending Forest into the break with a two-goal cushion and all the momentum.

The Knockout Blow

Any hopes of a Chelsea comeback were extinguished seven minutes after the restart. Super-sub Morgan Gibbs-White made an instant impact, threading a ball through to Awoniyi, who grabbed his second of the night with a clinical finish from close range.

Stamford Bridge began to empty long before the final whistle, as the Blues looked devoid of ideas for much of the second half. A late overhead kick from João Pedro in stoppage time finally ended Chelsea’s nine-and-a-half-hour goal drought, but it was nothing more than a consolation in a dismal performance.

Key Match Stats

Survival Race: Forest move six points clear of the relegation zone with three games left.

The Drought Ends: João Pedro’s 93rd-minute goal was Chelsea’s first in nearly six matches.

Clinical Awoniyi: The Nigerian striker had a hand in all three goals for the visitors.

Attendance: 39,605 at a increasingly frustrated Stamford Bridge.
