The “honeymoon phase” for Kylian Mbappé at the Santiago Bernabéu has officially come to a crashing halt. While the French superstar has statistically enjoyed a strong maiden campaign in Spain, the vibes behind the scenes are reaching a toxic boiling point. With Real Madrid staring down a trophyless season and arch-rivals Barcelona on the verge of clinching La Liga, Mbappé’s recent behavior has reportedly created a significant “distance” between him and the rest of the squad.

The Sardinia Scandal

The latest flashpoint occurred this past weekend. While his teammates were grinding out a 2-0 win over Espanyol to mathematically keep the title race alive, an injured Mbappé was spotted disembarking a private jet in Madrid after a high-visibility vacation in Sardinia and Cagliari.

The optics were, to put it mildly, catastrophic. Mbappé is currently sidelined with a muscle strain in his left leg sustained during the April 24th clash with Real Betis. While the club technically gave him permission to manage his recovery, the “lack of discretion” regarding his luxury getaway—widely publicized on social media—has been viewed as a slap in the face to a locker room already reeling from a Champions League exit at the hands of Bayern Munich.

“Selfishness” and Dressing Room Factions

The discontent isn’t just about one trip; it’s about a perceived pattern of behavior. Reports from Spanish outlets AS and Marca suggest the dressing room is now split into factions, with a growing “Team Vinícius vs. Team Mbappé” dynamic.

The Vinícius Contrast: There is reportedly far more affection within the squad for Vinícius Jr., who has been seen as the emotional leader and “defensive worker” during this difficult slump.

The “Selfish” Label: Former France international Emmanuel Petit recently added fuel to the fire, claiming on RMC Sport that Mbappé’s arrival has “filled the Real Madrid dressing room with selfishness,” describing the current atmosphere at Valdebebas as a “fiasco.”

Leadership Vacuum: With veterans like Dani Carvajal sidelined and legends like Toni Kroos gone, senior players reportedly feel Mbappé has failed to step up as a leader, choosing instead to prioritize his personal brand and recovery schedule over collective team spirit.

Arbeloa’s Balancing Act

Interim head coach Alvaro Arbeloa has found himself in the unenviable position of defending a player whose commitment is being openly questioned by the Madridistas. In his most recent press conference, Arbeloa attempted to shut down the noise:

“I don’t doubt the commitment of any of my players. All planning for injured players is supervised by our medical services. Beyond that, everyone does what they deem appropriate in their free time.”
However, despite the public backing, insiders suggest Arbeloa is privately frustrated by the “distraction” Mbappé has become during a week that culminates in a must-win El Clasico.

The El Clasico Ultimatum

The timing of this fallout couldn’t be worse. Real Madrid faces Barcelona on Sunday, May 10, in a match that could officially see the Blaugrana crowned champions on Madrid’s own soil.

President Florentino Pérez is reportedly “angry” and has made it clear that he expects Mbappé to be fit and firing for the clash. If the Frenchman fails to deliver a season-defining performance on Sunday, the “distance” between him and the Bernabéu faithful might become permanent.
