The search for the next architect of Ukrainian football appears to be over. In a move that blends nostalgia with a modern tactical edge, Italian specialist Andrea Maldera is reportedly finalized to become the new head coach of the Ukraine national team.
The news, first broken by insider Fabrizio Romano on Monday, marks a significant homecoming for a man who already holds a deep, literal connection to the nation—having famously tattooed the Ukrainian coat of arms and flag on his arm following the team’s Euro 2020 qualifying success.
From Tactical Analyst to Top Boss
Maldera is far from a stranger to the Zbirna faithful. Between 2016 and 2021, he was the strategic brain behind Andriy Shevchenko, serving as a key assistant during Ukraine’s most successful European Championship run. His meticulous tactical and technical analysis was credited as a cornerstone of the side that reached the Euro 2020 quarter-finals.
Since leaving the Ukrainian setup, Maldera has been sharpening his craft at the highest level of European club football. He followed Roberto De Zerbi to both Brighton & Hove Albion and Marseille, where he served as a vital second-in-command. Now, with De Zerbi having recently taken the reins at Tottenham Hotspur, Maldera has chosen to step out of the assistant’s shadow to lead a project he calls “part of his life.”
A Promise Kept
Maldera’s affection for Ukraine has never been a secret. His 2019 tattoo wasn’t just a celebration; it was the fulfillment of a bet made with the coaching staff during the qualifying campaign.
“I am very happy to wear the Ukrainian flag on my body,” Maldera said at the time. “Ukraine is part of my life. I am Ukrainian and Italian.” This emotional bond, combined with his intimate knowledge of the current squad’s core, likely made him the standout candidate for the UAF.
The Road Ahead
The Italian arrives at a critical juncture. Ukraine is currently navigating a tough UEFA Women’s Nations League cycle and looking ahead to major men’s qualifications. Maldera’s immediate task will be to revitalize a squad that has shown flashes of brilliance but struggled for consistency on the global stage since the 2021 highs.
With his reputation as a tactical “nerd” and his proven ability to develop young talent, Maldera’s appointment is seen as a strategic pivot toward a more modern, possession-based style of play that mirrors the “De Zerbi-ball” he helped implement in the Premier League and Ligue 1.
