Tension High as Hull and Millwall Battle to a Play-off Standstill

0

The stakes couldn’t be higher at the MKM Stadium on Friday night, but after 90 minutes of grueling Championship play-off action, Hull City and Millwall remain deadlocked at 0-0. It was a classic first-leg encounter—cagey, physical, and defined by missed opportunities that will surely haunt both managers heading into the return fixture.

Early Drama and Woodwork Worries

The Tigers nearly tore the script up within the first 120 seconds. Mohamed Belloumi embarked on a breathtaking individual run, slicing through the Millwall defense like a hot knife through butter, only to see his effort cannon back off the post. It was a moment that set the stadium alight, but unfortunately for the home fans, it was as close as they would get to a breakthrough.

Millwall, resolute and physically imposing, eventually grew into the game. They dominated the ball for large stretches, finishing with over 60% possession. Camiel Neghli was the standout for the visitors, nearly silencing the Hull faithful in the 69th minute when his strike clipped the outside of the upright.

Controversy at the Death

The real talking point arrived five minutes from time. The Lions thought they had snatched a priceless away win when Ryan Leonard volleyed home from close range. However, referee Gavin Ward was quick to blow his whistle, ruling the goal out for a foul by Tristan Crama in the buildup. Millwall boss Alex Neil was visibly frustrated on the touchline, later describing the decision as “harsh” in his post-match assessment.

Defensive Masterclass

While the attackers struggled to find the net, the defenders took center stage. Charlie Hughes was a titan for Hull, racking up ten clearances and two blocks to ensure a clean sheet. At the other end, Millwall’s backline restricted Hull to just one shot on target all evening, proving exactly why they are so difficult to break down under pressure.

Everything now rests on the second leg at The Den this Monday. Millwall will be confident with their home crowd behind them, but Hull’s ability to soak up pressure and strike on the counter makes this a total toss-up.
