Doué for the Crown: Late Magic Moves PSG to the Brink of 14th Title

0

It wasn’t pretty, and for about 80 minutes, it was downright dull. But in the rain-soaked Parc des Princes on Sunday night, Paris Saint-Germain took a massive leap toward a record-extending 14th Ligue 1 title, grinding out a 1-0 victory over a stubborn Stade Brestois side.

The headlines will belong to Désiré Doué, but for much of the match, the big talking point was a bizarre technical glitch in the first half that left referee Jérôme Brisard unable to talk to his assistants. That delay summed up a frustrating evening where PSG dominated possession (67%) but couldn’t find a way through Brest’s low block.

The Breakthrough

Brest defended like their lives depended on it. With Grégoire Coudert making four vital saves and the backline led by Brendan Chardonnet putting in a shift, the “Pirates” almost escaped with a point. However, their expected goals (xG) of just 0.27 told the story of a team that had no interest in attacking.

The deadlock finally shattered in the 82nd minute. Lucas Hernández, who was solid all night, found Doué with a sharp pass. The young Frenchman didn’t hesitate, skipping past three defenders before unleashing a wicked right-footed strike from the edge of the area that tucked into the bottom corner. It was Doué’s 7th goal of the campaign, and arguably the most significant.

The Finish Line in Sight

This win puts PSG on 73 points, six clear of second-placed Lens. The math is now simple: the Parisians need just a single point from their remaining two matches to officially seal the championship. They could even crown themselves champions as early as Wednesday if they secure a draw in their rescheduled fixture against Lens.

While the performance lacked the usual Parisian flair, it showed the grit required to close out a title race. With Lens having secured their Champions League spot earlier in the week, the pressure is entirely on PSG to finish the job.
