The “Yellow Submarine” had their home fortress breached on Wednesday night in one of the most dramatic turnarounds of the La Liga season. Sevilla pulled off a miraculous escape at the Estadio de la Cerámica, coming from two goals down to defeat third-placed Villarreal 3-2. The victory effectively secures Sevilla’s safety in the top flight, while snapping Villarreal’s impressive six-match winning streak at home.
For the hosts, who had already rubber-stamped their place in next season’s Champions League, it was a tale of two halves. For the visitors, it was a night where they showed the grit and “Nervión” spirit that has been missing for much of a turbulent campaign.
A First-Half Masterclass from Villarreal
It took just 13 minutes for the hosts to assert their dominance. Georges Mikautadze showed great awareness to find Gerard Moreno, who took a touch to navigate past two defenders before coolly rolling the ball into the bottom corner.
The pressure didn’t let up. By the 20th minute, it was 2-0. Nicolas Pépé threaded a needle with a pass to Alberto Moleiro, who drew out Odysseas Vlachodimos before clipping a cross to the back post for Mikautadze to tap home his own goal. At that point, it looked like a routine night for Marcelino’s side, who were playing with the freedom of a team already guaranteed a top-four finish.
The Great Escape
The comeback began in the 36th minute when Lucien Agoumé unleashed a diagonal ball that Oso took in his stride perfectly. The youngster skipped past a defender and scored just his second goal of the season in spectacular style to give Sevilla a lifeline.
Suddenly, the momentum shifted. Deep into first-half stoppage time, Rubén Vargas cut a pass back for Kike Salas, who met the ball with a sweet half-volley that flew into the net. From 2-0 down, Sevilla had leveled the game before the referee could even blow for the break.
The second half was a tense affair as Villarreal pushed to reclaim their lead, but it was the visitors who found the decisive blow. In the 72nd minute, substitute and Nigerian sensation Akor Adams proved once again why he is the man for the big occasion. Rising highest, he powered home a header that sent the travelling supporters into a frenzy and moved Sevilla up to 10th in the table.
Survival Secured
The result means Sevilla now sit on 43 points, firmly clear of the relegation zone with just two matches left. The “fire sale” fears that had been circling the club may be temporarily silenced as they look to build on a third consecutive victory.
For Villarreal, the loss is a minor blemish on a fantastic season, but it serves as a reminder that intensity cannot be dropped in La Liga, even with the Champions League anthem already playing in the distance.
