Five in a Row: PSG Secure Historic 14th Ligue 1 Title with Win over Lens

0

The Parisian dynasty shows no signs of slowing down. Paris Saint-Germain officially clinched the 2025/26 Ligue 1 title on Wednesday night, securing a 2-0 victory over their closest rivals, RC Lens, at a rocking Stade Bollaert-Delelis. The win pushes PSG nine points clear at the top with only one game remaining, marking their fifth consecutive league crown and a record-extending 14th title overall.

In a season where Lens pushed the champions harder than many expected—even holding the top spot as recently as February—Luis Enrique’s side showed their championship pedigree when it mattered most. PSG have been relentless in the run-in, picking up 22 points from their last 33 available to extinguish any hope of a title upset.

Kvaratskhelia and Mbaye Bring the Magic

The night belonged to the stars, both established and emerging. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who has been in scintillating form since the turn of the year, broke the deadlock in the 29th minute. After Oismane Dembélé—wearing the captain’s armband for the first time in Ligue 1—pounced on a defensive error, he lofted a perfect ball to the Georgian wizard, who smashed a powerful right-footed strike into the far corner.

While Lens fought valiantly and forced several “world-class” saves from goalkeeper Matvei Safonov, they couldn’t find a breakthrough. The title was mathematically sealed in stoppage time when 18-year-old sensation Ibrahim Mbaye finished off a clinical counter-attack, thumping a shot in off the crossbar to trigger wild celebrations in the away end.

By the Numbers: A Dominant Campaign

The statistics from this season paint a picture of a club operating on a different level:

Historical Milestone: This is the first time in PSG’s history they have won five league titles in a row.

Youth Movement: The average age of the starting XI this season was just 24, the youngest ever for a PSG title-winning side.

Road Warriors: The win at Lens was their 11th away victory of the season, the highest in the division.

Possession Kings: Under Enrique, PSG averaged nearly 70% possession across the campaign, the highest mark in Ligue 1 for two decades.

Eyes on the Treble

With the Trophée des Champions and the FIFA Intercontinental Cup already in the trophy cabinet, this league title marks the third piece of silverware for the season. However, the biggest test is still to come.

The focus now shifts immediately to Budapest, where PSG will face Arsenal in the Champions League final on May 30th. Having secured the domestic title with a game to spare, Enrique now has the luxury of resting key players for the final match against Paris FC, giving his squad a significant fitness advantage heading into the European showpiece.
