There wasn’t a dry eye in the Riyadh Air Metropolitano on Sunday evening. The script was already written for a fairytale ending, and while the football itself was a gritty, high-stakes affair, the night completely belonged to one man: Antoine Griezmann.

Playing his final home game for Atlético Madrid before his highly anticipated summer move to MLS outfit Orlando City, the 35-year-old French maestro celebrated his monumental 500th official appearance for Los Colchoneros.

It was an evening of raw emotion, a standing ovation that shook the rafters, and a crucial 1-0 victory over relegation-threatened Girona that kept Atlético’s hopes of a third-place La Liga finish firmly alive.

The Mastermind Behind the Match-Winner

Diego Simeone’s men knew they had to match the weight of the occasion, but it was Girona who nearly spoiled the party early on. The visitors, fighting desperately for their top-flight survival, came out swinging. Bryan Gil missed an absolute sitter from six yards out, a mistake that would quickly haunt the Catalan side.

Inevitably, it was Griezmann who took control to punish them.

In the 21st minute, just moments after seeing his own sharp effort denied by Paulo Gazzaniga, the Frenchman showed exactly why he is considered one of the most intelligent players to ever wear the red and white stripes. Latching onto a quick transition, Griezmann looked up and delivered a trademark, perfectly weighted low cross right into the danger zone.

Ademola Lookman made no mistake, bursting forward to tap the ball home from close range and break the deadlock. The stadium erupted, not just for the goal, but to chant the name of their iconic number 7, who had just notched yet another crucial assist in his storied career.

Oblak Stands Firm to Protect the Legacy

While the fairytale ending didn’t include a farewell goal for Griezmann—partly due to a late Thiago Almada pass that just missed its mark, and some top-class goalkeeping from Gazzaniga—Atlético had to dig deep to secure the three points.

Girona threw absolutely everything they had at the Atlético backline, racking up an impressive 25 shots and a massive 2.14 expected goals (xG) metric.

However, Jan Oblak was simply unbeatable. The Slovenian shot-stopper pulled off a string of world-class saves, tipping powerful strikes from Viktor Tsygankov and Azzedine Ounahi around the post to preserve the narrow 1-0 lead.

When the final whistle blew, the relief was palpable, but the tension instantly dissolved into pure celebration. Girona sank into the relegation zone, while Atlético Madrid toasted a hard-fought 15th home victory of the season.

Au Revoir, Little Prince: A Legacy Etched in Gold

As Griezmann walked around the pitch after the match, applauding the tearful Metropolitano crowd, the weight of his legacy became real.

Across his two legendary spells under Diego Simeone, Griezmann’s numbers read like absolute fiction: 500 official appearances, 212 goals, and 100 direct assists. He departs not just as the club’s all-time leading goalscorer, but as a symbol of the gritty, relentless, and world-class spirit that defined the modern era of Atlético Madrid.

The stadium screens flashed “Au Revoir, Antoine,” but for the Rojiblanco faithful, he will forever remain their Little Prince. Major League Soccer is getting an absolute genius, but Madrid will deeply miss its favorite son.
