The Santiago Bernabéu is preparing for an evening draped in deep emotion and nostalgia. Real Madrid have officially confirmed that club captain and legendary right-back Dani Carvajal will depart the club at the conclusion of the 2025/26 season, bringing the curtain down on a magnificent 23-year association with the Spanish powerhouse.
The 34-year-old veteran will lace up his boots in the famous white jersey for the final time this weekend when Los Blancos host Athletic Bilbao. The club has already announced plans for a massive post-match homage to honor a man whose career has been entirely woven into the modern fabric of Real Madrid.
From La Fábrica to Football Immortality
Carvajal’s journey is the ultimate blueprint for any aspiring academy player. Having joined the ranks of La Fábrica back in 2002 as a ten-year-old boy, he famously stood alongside the late Alfredo Di Stéfano to lay the very first stone of the Ciudad Real Madrid training complex—a moment that symbolized his deep-rooted connection to the club.
Aside from a brief, solitary season developmental loan at Bayer Leverkusen in 2012/13, Carvajal has spent his entire senior professional career patrolling Madrid’s right flank with a blend of ferocious tenacity, defensive steel, and tactical brilliance.
Over a glittering 13-year stint in the first team, Carvajal racked up 450 official appearances, scoring 14 goals and providing 57 assists. More importantly, he stands proudly as one of only five players in the entire history of football to lift an astonishing six European Cups.
In total, his trophy cabinet boasts an incredible 27 major honors:
6 UEFA Champions Leagues
6 FIFA Club World Cups
5 UEFA Super Cups
4 La Liga Titles
2 Copa del Rey Crowns
4 Spanish Super Cups
A Bitter Pill: The Passing of the Torch
While his legacy remains completely untouchable, Carvajal’s final campaign in the capital has unfortunately been fraught with frustration. The blockbuster arrival of Trent Alexander-Arnold last summer instantly restricted his minutes, relegating the club captain to a secondary role.
Compounded by persistent right foot injuries and a general loss of physical sharpness, Carvajal struggled to find any consistent rhythm under manager Álvaro Arbeloa this term. The physical toll has also carried heavy international consequences; Spanish national team coach Luis de la Fuente has reportedly opted to leave the veteran defender out of his upcoming 2026 World Cup squad, favoring fresher options like Pedro Porro and Marcos Llorente.
With his current contract expiring at the end of June, the hierarchy opted against offering an extension. Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez led the public tributes, ensuring the departure reflects the stature of a true icon.
“Dani Carvajal is a legend and a symbol of Real Madrid and its academy,” Pérez stated in an official release. “His image alongside our beloved Alfredo Di Stéfano will forever remain in the hearts of all madridistas. Carvajal has always exemplified the values of Real Madrid. This is and will always be his home.”
