What an absolute rollercoaster of a final weekend in Spain’s top flight. If anyone thought the final matchday of the 2025/2026 La Liga season would be a quiet, predictable affair just because the trophy was already wrapped up, they were dead wrong. The Spanish league saved some of its most chaotic, emotional, and breathless football for the grand finale.

The headline story from yesterday’s action came out of the Mestalla, where newly crowned champions Barcelona stumbled heavily in their final outing, falling 3-1 to an incredibly clinical Valencia. While the defeat didn’t strip any shine from Barca’s title celebrations, the match belonged entirely to Robert Lewandowski. The legendary Polish striker scored an emotional farewell goal for the Catalan giants in the 61st minute, marking his final appearance with a brilliant finish. However, Valencia completely took over the script afterward. Javi Guerra equalized just five minutes later, Luis Rioja put the hosts ahead in the 71st, and Guido Rodríguez added a late stoppage-time dagger to wrap up a massive victory for Los Che against the champions.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid made sure they finished their campaign with an absolute attacking masterclass, thrashing Athletic Bilbao 4-2 in a high-octane affair at the Santiago Bernabéu. Los Blancos looked utterly lethal in transition, unlocking the Basque defense with ruthless precision to lock down second place in the standings with 86 points.

Down in the trenches, the true tragedy of the final day unfolded with absolute relegation heartbreak. Girona and Mallorca suffered the ultimate devastation, officially dropping down to the Segunda División after a brutal set of final whistles. Mallorca did everything humanly possible by blowing Real Oviedo away in a commanding 3-0 victory, but results across the country completely left them stranded. Girona’s fight also fell agonizingly short as they could only manage a tense 1-1 draw against Elche, leaving them a single point away from safety. It is a cruel reminder that in this league, the margin between survival and total despair is microscopic.
