It was supposed to be the ultimate celebration, a sun-drenched festival of appreciation for a decade of unparalleled dominance. Instead, a relentless Aston Villa gatecrashed Pep Guardiola’s emotional Manchester City farewell, turning an afternoon of heavy tears into a frustrating 2-1 defeat for the hosts on the final day of the Premier League season.

The Etihad Stadium, boosted by a record 60,332 crowd following the extension of the newly minted Guardiola Stand, was in fine voice under the blazing 25°C Manchester heat. There was a poignant, heavy air before kickoff as Guardiola walked out alongside departing icons Bernardo Silva—wearing the captain’s armband on his 460th appearance—and John Stones.

For the first 45 minutes, the script was being followed to perfection. Facing an Aston Villa side that made eight sweeping changes just four days after their historic UEFA Europa League triumph in Istanbul, City dictated the tempo. The early pressure paid dividends in the 22nd minute when Antoine Semenyo reacted quickest to a flicked-on corner, hooking the ball home at the far post to send the stadium into a frenzy.

But anyone expecting Unai Emery’s high-flying Villa to roll over underestimated the grit that secured them a phenomenal fourth-place finish.

Whatever was said in the visitors’ dressing room worked like magic. Seconds into the second half, the game flipped completely on its head. Leon Bailey swung a dangerous corner from the right, and a major defensive mix-up saw John Stones inadvertently head the ball directly against Ollie Watkins. The lethal striker swivelled instantly, flashing a strike past James Trafford to silence the home faithful.

Smelling blood, Villa struck again just after the hour mark. Watkins, fresh off his inclusion in England’s World Cup squad, beat the offside trap to slot home his second of the afternoon and 21st of a spectacular campaign. A tense VAR check ensued, but the goals stood, prompting Watkins to hilariously mimic lifting a trophy in front of the travelling support.

Guardiola threw everything at the problem, introducing Rayan Cherki and Mateo Kovačić. The changes triggered an incredibly raw moment as a crying Bernardo Silva left the pitch to a standing ovation and a joint guard of honour from both squads. Phil Foden thought he had salvaged a late point for the Cityzens, but his equalizer was ruthlessly chalked off for offside.

While the defeat left a bitter taste on the pitch, the afternoon ultimately belonged to the legacy of the man in the dugout. City wrapped up their campaign comfortably in second place, with the FA Cup and Carabao Cup already secured this season to bring Pep’s final haul to 20 trophies over an incredible 10 years.

“I gave it my all,” a deeply moved Guardiola told the crowd post-match, cementing an emotional end to the most glittering era in modern English football.
