The Netherlands’ World Cup preparations have been hit with a massive, devastating blow just days before their tournament opener. Arsenal defender Jurrien Timber has officially been ruled out of the 2026 World Cup after failing to sufficiently recover from a persistent groin injury.

The Dutch Football Federation (KNVB) confirmed the tragic news on Monday, sending shockwaves through Ronald Koeman’s squad as they finalized their training camp in New York.

A Bitter End to an Injury-Plagued Race

For Timber, the news is a cruel twist of fate. The 24-year-old versatile defender originally picked up the severe groin injury back on March 14 during Arsenal’s Premier League victory over Everton. The problem heavily restricted his involvement during the high-stakes Premier League run-in, forcing him to watch from the sidelines for over two months.

There was a massive glimmer of hope just over a week ago. Timber defied the medical odds to make a dramatic return from the bench, playing 55 minutes for Mikel Arteta’s side during their intense Champions League final clash against Paris Saint-Germain.

However, despite pushing his body to the absolute limit for his club, the Dutch medical department determined that throwing him into the relentless, high-intensity environment of a World Cup would be medically irresponsible.

“The 24-year-old defender has not recovered sufficiently from a groin injury to take part in the World Cup in a medically responsible manner. In consultation with the medical staff, it has therefore been decided that Timber will leave the national team’s pre-camp.”

Koeman’s Growing Injury Nightmare

Timber’s forced exit is a bitter pill to swallow for manager Ronald Koeman, who is watching his defensive and midfield depth rapidly disintegrate. The Arsenal star joins a staggering list of high-profile Dutch absentees already ruled out of the tournament, including superstar attacker Xavi Simons, alongside veteran center-backs Matthijs de Ligt and Stefan de Vrij.

To fill the massive void left in the backline, Koeman has officially called up Sunderland defender Lutsharel Geertruida, who had been waiting anxiously on the team’s standby list. Geertruida will link up with the squad immediately as they pack up their base camp in New York and head out to their permanent tournament headquarters in Kansas City, Missouri.

With elite Premier League stars like Virgil van Dijk, Nathan Ake, and Micky van de Ven still anchoring the defense, the Dutch still boast serious quality, but losing Timber’s unique tactical flexibility across the back four is an undeniable setback. The Netherlands will have to regroup instantly before they square off against Japan in their Group opener on June 14 in Dallas.
