The European managerial carousel is spinning at a dizzying pace, and RC Lens mastermind Pierre Sage is sitting right at the center of it. Following a truly historic campaign in France, the 47-year-old tactician has become the number one target for Crystal Palace as they scramble to find a successor for Oliver Glasner.

With negotiations accelerating rapidly over the last 48 hours, South London is buzzing with optimism that a deal could be wrapped up before the end of the week.

From Sacked at Lyon to a Historic Double in Lens

To understand why Crystal Palace is pushing so hard for Sage, you only have to look at the miraculous 12 months he just put together. After a bittersweet exit from Lyon in January 2025, Sage took over a mid-table Lens squad last summer and completely revolutionized their style of play.

Deploying a fluid, high-octane 3-4-2-1 system, Sage masterminded a season for the history books. Not only did he guide Lens to a stunning second-place finish in Ligue 1—pushing heavyweights Paris Saint-Germain right to the absolute wire—but he also delivered the club’s first-ever Coupe de France trophy with a thrilling 3-1 victory over Nice at the Stade de France.

His spectacular 67.5% win percentage and reputation for nurturing world-class young talent instantly put him on the radar of Europe’s elite, earning him the Ligue 1 Manager of the Season award.

Why Crystal Palace Came Calling

Crystal Palace entering the market for a high-profile manager comes on the heels of an incredibly successful but emotional era. Oliver Glasner departed Selhurst Park as a true hero, having just guided the Eagles to a historic UEFA Conference League trophy to go along with last year’s FA Cup triumph.

Palace initially targeted Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola to replace Glasner, but with Iraola heavily tipped to succeed Arne Slot at Liverpool, Palace chairman Steve Parish pivoted aggressively toward Sage.

The allure of the Premier League is strong, and insiders reveal that Sage is highly enthusiastic about testing himself in England. Taking over a dynamic, ambitious Palace squad fresh off consecutive years of silverware represents the perfect step up for the highly-rated Frenchman.

The Stumbling Block: Lens Stand Firm

While personal terms between Palace and Sage are not expected to be an issue, finalizing the deal means dealing with Lens owner Joseph Oughourlian. Sage is currently under contract in Northern France until 2028, and the club is desperate to keep him to lead their upcoming UEFA Champions League campaign.

Reports from France indicate that Lens will demand a compensation fee of nearly £2 million to release their manager. While the relationship between Sage and the Lens board has grown somewhat tense as crunch talks loom, Palace remains completely confident that they can meet the financial demands and officially introduce Sage as their new boss in the coming days.
