Shrewd Business: Tottenham Confirm Signing of Bournemouth Star Marcos Senesi on a Free Transfer

Tottenham Hotspur have pulled off an absolute masterstroke in the summer transfer window, officially confirming the signing of Argentina international defender Marcos Senesi.

The 29-year-old centre-back will move to north London on a free transfer on July 1, right after his contract with AFC Bournemouth expires at the end of June.

Spurs have moved incredibly fast to secure one of the most attractive free agents on the market. Senesi becomes the second major free transfer to arrive under head coach Roberto De Zerbi this summer, following closely in the footsteps of former Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson.

For a Tottenham side looking to aggressively rebuild and completely erase the memory of back-to-back 17th-place Premier League finishes, this is exactly the kind of intent the fans have been crying out for.

Senesi is a physical, left-footed tactical dream. He has spent four brilliant years on the south coast, completely transforming Bournemouth’s back line and helping them secure European football for the very first time in their history last season.

He isn’t just a rugged defender who loves a tackle; he is elite on the ball. Last term, no outfield player in the top flight completed more long passes than Senesi’s 182. He also topped the Premier League charts for assists by a centre-back, while sitting comfortably in the top three for interceptions, blocks, and clearances.

De Zerbi could barely hide his excitement about integrating the Argentine into his high-pressing, possession-based philosophy. The Italian tactician emphasized that Senesi’s composure, leadership, and unique ability to break lines from deep will give the squad massive flexibility in formation next season.

Senesi has already been handed the iconic No. 5 shirt—a jersey he wore with distinction at Bournemouth and one left vacant at Spurs since Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s departure.

Having missed out on the final cut for Argentina’s 2026 World Cup squad, Senesi will be fully rested and ready to join Spurs for the entirety of their crucial preseason program in early July.
