Football can be a cruel, brutal game, and Gor Mahia learned that lesson the hardest way possible in Kigali.
Just days after putting on a masterclass and dismantling Rwandan champions APR FC 5-0, K’Ogalo were brought crashing back down to earth. A heartbreaking 1-0 defeat to Uganda’s Vipers SC on Monday afternoon completely flipped Group A on its head.
Head coach Charles Akonnor took a massive gamble heading into the clash, making nine changes from the side that cruised past APR. Handing debuts to new signings like goalkeeper Humphrey Katasi, Akonnor clearly wanted to rotate his squad and manage energy levels for the long haul.
For most of the 90 minutes, it looked like the gamble might pay off with a hard-fought draw.
Both sides had their moments in a physical, end-to-end battle at the Kigali Pelé Stadium. Ebenezer Adukwaw and Sharif Musa came close to breaking the deadlock for Gor, while Farouk Miya posed a constant threat for the Ugandan champions. But as the clock ticked into extra time, a 0-0 stalemate seemed completely written in the stars.
Then came the 92nd-minute dagger.
A swinging cross from Ashraf Mandela found substitute Gusto Mulongo unmarked inside the box. Mulongo timed his run to perfection, powering a header past Katasi to send the Vipers bench into absolute delirium.
The late blow leaves Gor Mahia sitting on three points from two matches, while Vipers take full command of Group A with six points. Akonnor’s men now face a must-win situation against Djibouti’s Garde Républicaine on Thursday if they want to guarantee a spot in the semifinals.
