Football Is Not For Sale: Inside Gianni Infantino’s $20 Billion FIFA Gamble

0

If you thought global football couldn’t get any more cash-obsessed, Gianni Infantino just held the beer of every sports executive on the planet.

In a move that has sent absolute shockwaves across the sporting world, the FIFA president confirmed plans to bundle up the commercial rights to football’s biggest tournaments and sell a chunk of them to private investors. The new commercial arm, dubbed FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE), is being valued at a staggering $20 billion, with FIFA aiming to rake in up to $4.2 billion by offloading a 20 percent minority stake.

The pitch? Working alongside Wall Street heavyweight JPMorgan, Infantino claims the move will democratize the game and inject billions directly into football development worldwide. Under the proposed plan, all 211 member associations would get a sweet $20 million one-time payout, plus increased yearly development funding down the line.

Unsurprisingly, critics are having none of it.

European governing body UEFA immediately slammed the proposal, warning that FIFA has crossed a line that should never be crossed. Their message was brutally clear: football is not an asset to trade, and it certainly isn’t Infantino’s to sell. Even former FIFA chief Sepp Blatter jumped into the fray, publicly calling out his successor for trying to sell off the soul of the beautiful game.

The backlash isn’t just coming from football suits, either. Reports linking potential private equity deals to high-profile political figures and private investors have sparked outrage among fan groups and politicians alike.

Infantino has given member associations until mid-September to vote on the proposal. But as resistance builds across Europe and beyond, this high-stakes power grab is shaping up to be the biggest political battleground football has seen in decades.
