It was not the fairytale ending Kenyan fans were praying for in Scotland.
Africa’s speed king Ferdinand Omanyala saw his dream of making history as the first African male sprinter to defend a Commonwealth 100m title come to a sudden halt. Competing at Scotstoun Stadium in wet and slippery conditions, the 30-year-old failed to reach the final after crashing out in the semi-finals.
Lining up in the second semi-final heat, Omanyala struggled to find his explosive stride on the soaked track. Crossing the finish line in sixth place with a time of 10.19 seconds, he missed out on the qualification spots, officially bringing an end to his reign as Commonwealth champion.
Speaking after the race, a disappointed Omanyala admitted that the heavy downpour severely disrupted his execution and momentum off the blocks. While rainy weather is part of open-air track events, the cold Scottish storm clearly got the better of the African record holder when it mattered most.
The 100m crown ultimately went to Cameroon’s Emmanuel Eseme, who mastered the wet conditions to storm to gold.
Although Glasgow ended in frustration, Omanyala’s season is far from over. With major Diamond League stops and the World Ultimate Championships still ahead, Kenya’s top sprinter will be eager to shake off the rainy disappointment and get back to winning ways.
