Faith Cherotich showed the world once again why she is a force to be reckoned with. The 22-year-old Kenyan star put on an absolute clinic in the women’s 3,000m steeplechase final at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, storming to gold and setting a brand-new Games record of 9:01.76.
The race got off to a tactical start, with Uganda’s Olympic champion Peruth Chemutai pushing the early pace. But Cherotich kept her cool, staying patient in the lead pack and trusting her strategy. She absorbed the pressure through the opening laps before making her decisive strike right after the final water jump, blowing past the field with an explosive finishing kick.
England’s Elise Thorner took silver with a personal best of 9:05.45, while Chemutai hung on for bronze.
Speaking after her triumph, a beaming Cherotich kept her mindset simple: “I ran my race, and I was not looking back. The only tactic I had was to win the race, nothing else.”
With this victory, Cherotich not only secured Kenya’s second gold medal of the Games but also wiped out the previous Commonwealth record, confirming her status at the very top of world athletics.
